RESEARCH AND INFORMATION

This update was developed for health professionals and GPs and provides the scientific background on the link between physical activity, nutrition and obesity.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction - The Facts Harvested.  A study of New Zealanders’ physical activity and nutrition
In 2003 the Cancer Society undertook a major survey (n= 8163) in partnership with SPARC.  A key focus of this study was to better understand opportunities to change the behaviour of those not meeting the Ministry of Health’s fruit and vegetable intake targets (three vegetable and two fruit servings per day).

The Pulp Fiction survey, in partnership with Te Hotu Manawa Maori, was re-analysed with a specific focus on Maori.  This report summarises major descriptive results from the survey relevant to fruit/vegetable intake and cancer prevention among Maori and where applicable, makes comparisons with NZ European.  It also highlights immediately apparent awareness needs or information gaps while acknowledging that further work is needed to identify how to change behaviour.
