REDUCING YOUR RISK OF CANCER
The aim of prevention is to reduce your risk of developing cancer through reducing exposure to known cancer causing agents, for example, tobacco, asbestos, alcohol and some infections. Prevention also includes promoting lifestyle behaviours that have been identified as increasing your ability to stay well and reduce your risk of developing illness including cancer. These behaviours include: having a diet that is high in vegetables and fruit, maintaining a healthy body weight and being physically active.
Reducing your risk of cancer is the focus of Health Promotion activities and the Cancer Society is the key organisation in New Zealand dedicated to the prevention of Cancer.
The Cancer Society has prioritised its prevention programmes which are informed by the evidence of the potential health gains. The three main activity areas are tobacco control, skin cancer prevention and nutrition and physical activity.
A further priority area of Cancer Society Health Promotion activity is to provide reliable and credible information about screening and early detection.
