TOBACCO CONTROL
"The deaths and misery caused by smoking continue to be one of the greatest scandals of our time"
Shigeru Omi, WHO regional director for the Western Pacific (Source: AFP, Sept 2007)
Tobacco smoking causes cancer of the lung, oral cavity, naso-, oro- and hypopharynx, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, larynx, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, kidney (body and pelvis), ureter, urinary bladder, uterine cervix and bone marrow (myeloid leukaemia) ( International Agency for Research on Cancer). It is estimated that tobacco causes one in four cancer deaths in New Zealand.
As a result of the unequivocal link between smoking and cancer the Society considers efforts to reduce smoking rates in this country to be one of the key strategic objectives of its cancer prevention programme and strongly supports efforts to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke, increase rates of smoking cessation and decrease uptake of smoking.
The Society recognises that smoking rates are considerably higher among Maori, Pacific and low socio-economic communities and is committed to ensuring that greater effort is put into developing effective interventions to reduce smoking in these groups. Efforts to ensure that evidence-based measures are effectively developed and implemented are vitally important in enabling this objective to be met.
Our goals are to reduce the number of people who develop cancers due to tobacco use and second hand smoke and to reduce tobacco related inequalities in health. Our objectives are:
- To advocate for stronger regulatory environments for tobacco products
- To decrease the proportion of Maori who smoke
- To decrease smoking rates in other groups with a high or increasing prevalence of smoking
- To decrease the proportion of youth who smoke
- To increase smokefree environments and reduce exposure to second hand smoke
- To support an increase in high quality, relevant research and evaluation
- To further increase the capacity and competency of the smokefree workforce
- To maintain the CSNZ’s leadership role in tobacco control advocacy nationally and internationally.
This tobacco control portal aims to provide information on cancer and smoking for students, professionals, the media and the general public. Please contact us if you would like any further information.
