KEEPING YOUR CHILDREN SMOKEFREE - HE ARORANGI WHAKAMUA

Even though it doesn’t always feel true, parents really can do a lot to reduce the chance that their tamariki / kids will become smokers.  You can take steps like:

  • Quit smoking , and encourage other members of your whanau / family to quit as well. Tamariki / kids copy their parents.  If you smoke your tamariki / kids are more likely to smoke too.
  • Make your home a Smokefree Home to protect your tamariki / kids from breathing in second-hand smoke.
  • Talk to your tamariki / kids about how bad smoking is for your health, how addictive it is, and how it makes you feel. Tell them you don’t want them to smoke .
  • Think about the amount of money we give our tamariki for pocket money or school lunches.  Don’t be too generous it will save you money and reduce the chance your tamariki will be able to buy cigarettes.  You might consider packing your tamariki / kids lunch at home rather than giving them money to buy their lunch. A homemade lunch with fruit will cost less, be more nutritious and reduce the chance your tamariki / kids will buy cigarettes with the money.
  • You may want to talk to your wider whanau / family about what you are doing to keep your tamariki / kids from smoking.  Ask them to support you by taking similar measures themselves.
  • Never give or buy your tamariki / kids cigarettes.
