The site includes information and resources for:

  • School management: information to support and strengthen your Smokefree school environment and community.

  • In-School Health Providers: Smokefree health promotion ideas for you to look at for your school community.

Smokefree Teaching Resources

Smokefree is for Me / Being Smokefree - Being Auahi Kore: Produced by the HSC, these resources encourage students to access and use information about smoking to develop a positive attitude to being smokefree now and in the future.  Both resources were developed with the help of practicing teachers, and have links to the Health and PE Curriculum.  The Ministry of Education’s ICT unit is encouraging school use of the Internet to access resources, and recommended that these resources be available online.  More...

Ma te huruhuru, ka rere te manu: Produced by Te Hotu Manawa Maori, this teaching unit has been produced for kaiako of 5 - 7 year olds, working in Maori medium classrooms and is estimated to be taught over a 2 - 3 week period. It is written entirely in Te Reo Maori and incorporates Achievement Objectives from both the Social Studies and Health curriculum documents. More...

Research on Reducing Youth Smoking Initiation

In early 2004 the HSC, with support from the Cancer Society, Apaarangi Tautoko Auahi Kore (now known as Te Reo Marama) and the Smokefree Coalition, sought and attained funding from the Ministry of Health to develop a national framework for action to reduce smoking initiation.  The group established an expert advisory group (review committee) and a process to develop a literature review of the evidence around effective interventions for reducing smoking initiation.  This literature review and the review committee process established the basis for the development of a framework to reduce smoking initiation in New Zealand, setting out practical actions for implementation. The framework has been developed for use by health providers, health funders, policy makers and researchers interested in youth tobacco control.
