SUPPORT DURING TREATMENT

The Cancer Society of New Zealand can provide that extra bit of care to complement that which is provided through the health care system through our allied treatment services.  The Cancer Society provides services aimed to support the physical and emotional needs of patients with cancer and their families through:

  • Community liaison nurses
  • Accommodation facilities
  • Transport to treatment
  • Meal service
  • Lymphoedema services
The range of services offered differs in each region so please contact your local Division of the Cancer Society to find out what is available near you.

Community Liaison Nurses
Community liaison nurses are trained oncology nurses that visit people at home.  Cancer Society nurses can provide help with understanding cancer and its treatment.  A nurse can also assist with managing symptoms and treatment side-effects.  Sometimes practical help, such as meal preparation, can be provided and a nurse can facilitate the process of getting that started.  Community liaison nurses offer emotional support and understanding as well as allied treatment services in the comfort of your home.

Accommodation Facilities
The Cancer Society supports accommodation facilities in all major treatment centres throughout New Zealand.  There are accommodation facilities in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.  All accommodation houses have cooking facilities.  On 1 January 2006 a government sponsored National Travel Assistance Policy takes effect.  In general, New Zealanders eligible for government accommodation assistance are those that live 100 km or more from the treatment facility.  Accommodation is reimbursed up to $75 per night (extended to $100 in Auckland and $80 in Wellington).  Contact your local Division of the Cancer Society to book your accommodation in advance.  Reservations are essential.

"A sanctuary and haven full of love and compassion. Words cannot explain the thanks," Chris & family, Invercargill

"A blessing and a privilege to have met such wonderful and caring people. Many thanks" Brenda, Wanaka

Transport to Treatment
Transport to treatment is a volunteer-based free service for people affected by cancer who need help getting to medical appointments and treatment sessions.  Volunteer drivers are required to meet certain requirements and receive Cancer Society training.  Their driving expenses are reimbursed by the Cancer Society.  In order to organise transport contact your local Division or enquire at your local cancer treatment centre.

"Without this service I could not have managed to do it [radiation therapy] on a daily basis," Christine, Wellington

Meal Service
A meal service is a volunteer-based service for people affected by cancer who need help with meals.  Volunteers prepare hearty and nutritious meals which are frozen and can be brought to your door.  Contact your local Division of the Cancer Society to enquire about the availability of this service.

Lymphoedema services
Lymphoedema services are for people who have swelling, often in the upper arms or legs, from lymph fluid build-up due to cancer or cancer treatment.  Massage and compression bandaging are the methods used to control lymphoedema.  Lymphoedema assessment, information and support services are available from the Cancer Society.  Contact your local Division of the Cancer Society to enquire about availability these services.
