Thank you!

1 September 2009

On behalf of the Cancer Society Auckland and the 19,000 people diagnosed with cancer each year, we would like to thank everyone for their amazing support this Daffodil Day.

As an organisation reliant on donations all contributions- no matter how big or small- make a difference. Thank you to all of our volunteers who made Daffodil Day possible and to everyone who gave so generously.

With your support the Cancer Society can continue to provide free support services and information to people affected by cancer in your community and carry out important scientific research and health promotion activities with the hope of creating a future with less cancer.

We are proud to be regarded as one of New Zealand's most trusted charities and this is reflected in our fundraising practices. Our fundraising costs are well within industry guidelines with around 81 cents in the dollar going directly towards services.

Donations are currently being counted and we will let you know how much was raised as soon as we are able.

Thank you once again for your support.

With your help there is hope.

Daffodils grow on Facebook

24 August 2009

This Daffodil Day the Cancer Society has joined Facebook.

One in three New Zealanders are affected by Cancer. The organisation has developed the Facebook page ‘Cancer Society Daffodil Day' as a place for people to meet online and share their experiences of Daffodil Day.

As well as sharing photos and stories, people will be able to make online donations to the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day. Text and telephone donation information is also available.

Daffodils, a symbol of hope, will be available on Facebook too. The Cancer Society has developed a range of free daffodil ‘gifts' that fans can send to their friends or themselves to make sure their profiles show their support for the Cancer Society.

Katherine Monks, National Business Development Manager said, "we are delighted to be connecting with as many people as we can through Facebook and Flickr. This is an exciting step for us into the social marketing space and we are looking forward to providing a meaningful place for people to share stories about Daffodil Day and show their support for the Cancer Society."

The ‘Cancer Society Daffodil Day' page is supported by a memory garden of photos on photo-sharing website Flickr.com. And further social media initiatives are planned for 2010, when Daffodil Day celebrates its 20 year anniversary.

Charity fundraising

10 August 2009

There have been many stories in the media recently about how much it costs charities to fundraise and where the money goes. The good news is that the Cancer Society is very efficient in this area; we keep costs to a minimum and a high percentage of money raised goes towards services and programmes.

We are proud to be regarded as one of New Zealand's most trusted charities and this is reflected in our fundraising practices:

  • We keep our fundraising expenses well within industry guidelines
  • We carry out our own fundraising and use volunteers wherever possible to minimise costs
  • We do not employ fundraising companies or pay commission to fundraisers, and do not engage telemarketing companies to solicit donations, or carry out door to door collections
  • Our annual report and full financial statements are freely available by request or on our website

In 2008/09, out of a fundraising income of $7,397,734, 84% went towards Cancer Society services and programmes. It cost us just 16 cents per dollar to fundraise. This includes all costs associated with fundraising such as staff wages, promotional material and resources, advertising and event costs.

Out of a total income of just over $10 million, 74% of the Cancer Society Auckland's total revenue was spent on delivering services and programmes in information, support, health promotion and research.

The remaining 26% was spent on the cost of fundraising and support systems which enable us to deliver our services and programmes. These include items such as computer systems, office staff, phone systems, insurance, postage and administration costs.
