Volunteer Opportunities
"Volunteering - a simple gesture that makes a world of difference"
Volunteer Drivers
The Cancer Society is seeking people in all areas (including the Porirua Basin, the Hutt Valley and the Kapiti Coast) to drive people with cancer to treatment at Wellington Hospital. If you have a car, a current driver's licence, and can spare some time (as little or as much as you like), you will discover that this will almost certainly be the best job you never get paid to do. There will be support from staff, other volunteers, training, a contribution to costs, and parking will be available.
Volunteer Hairdressers
In response to requests from nursing staff on Ward One, we are hoping to recruit a pool of mature experienced hairdressers who would be willing to visit cancer patients in hospital or at Margaret Stewart House or on occasions at the patient's home. They would need to provide their own equipment, but the Cancer Society would make some reimbursement towards the cost of products and transport. This is not a regular task - it is only requested occasionally - but it is a request we would very much like to be able to respond to.
Wellington Patient and Family Support Coordinator
We are in need of someone to coordinate the Cancer Society's patient and family support service volunteers in Wellington. This person will preferably have a nursing qualification and/or experience, or another appropriate community work qualification and experience. Key activities include liaising with health professionals, assessing the needs of each patient and their family, and selecting a suitable volunteer for each task. The time commitment is not usually more than 4 hours per week. This is a vital role enabling us to provide these service.
