Financial Q & A's
The Otago and Southland Division of the Cancer Society of New Zealand Incorporated receives no direct government funding and works to improve community well-being by reducing the incidence and impact of cancer with core services in Support Services, Health Promotion and Research.
- How much income does the Otago and Southland Division generate?
Last financial year, ending 31st March 2011, our Division generated $2,088,375 in income. $1,668,135 (80%) of this was from fundraising. - What were the main areas of income?
The single biggest source of income was from general fundraising activity including Daffodil Day and then bequests. - How much does it cost to operate this Division?
For the year ending March 2011 it cost $2,373,594 (excluding depreciation) to operate the Division. The largest single area of expenditure was in Support Services, which includes the operation of Kowhai House (accommodation) and the staff and resources we now have in nine different locations throughout Otago and Southland. Our next biggest service area is funding for Cancer Research followed by Health Promotion. - Does the Division have investments?
Yes we do, amounting to approximately the operating costs for one year. Because we are heavily reliant on fundraising to generate income we need some back up to sustain our free services in more difficult financial times and of course with an ageing population demand for our services continues to grow. - How much does it cost you to fundraise?
Last year it cost us $531,914 to raise $1,668,135, that's about 32%. - Does the Division pay national levies to the Cancer Society of New Zealand?
Yes we do. We pay levies that support national co-ordination and support for programmes and advocacy in Support Services, Health Promotion and the funding of Cancer Research. We pool our research levies to enable a national funding round so that the research projects with the most merit receive our combined funding support. In this current financial year our Division has committed to contributing $243,000 to research. - We are Registered Charity no: CC23699 you can find out more about our financial information on the Charities commission website www.charitiescommission.org.nz
