Reducing your risk of cancer
While we can never be sure that what we do will stop us developing cancer, we do know that one in three cancers are preventable. The number of people being diagnosed with cancer could be reduced significantly by living a healthy lifestyle.
Reducing your risk of cancer is a focus of health promotion and education activities of the Cancer Society. The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society focuses on several key health promotion areas.
Smokefree – as the single preventable cause of cancer, smoking is a key area of work for the Society. We are committed to promoting a tobacco-free New Zealand through policy advocacy and innovative education campaigns.
SunSmart – skin cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand and is largely preventable by avoiding excess exposure to the sun. The Cancer Society supports workplaces, schools and early childhood centres to be SunSmart. Undercover Cody (www.undercovercody.co.nz) is the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society’s SunSmart mascot.
Early detection - the aim of both screening and early detection programmes is to prevent cancer or detect cancer early and, hopefully, reduce the number of people who die from cancer each year.
Men's health - more New Zealand men get cancer and die of cancer than women.
Nutrition and physical activity - dietary factors are estimated to account for approximately 30 percent of cancers in industrialised countries, therefore the Society focuses on promoting a healthy lifestyles.
Waikato/Bay of Plenty gratefully acknowledge the support of these organisations:
