CanQuit Health Professional Training
The Can Quit programme has been developed by the Wellington Division in conjunction with the Wellington School of Medicine. The following Can Quit training courses are run for health professionals interested in providing Can Quit support services.
Level 1 - Smoking Cessation
Level 2 - Motivational Interviewing
Smoking Cessation Training
This full day course covers the New Zealand clinical guidelines, covers all aspects of smoking cessation, including brief intervention strategies in a primary care setting, quit counselling, pharmacotherapy and participating in the government-subsidised nicotine replacement therapy (Quit Cards) scheme.
Smoking Cessation Refresher
A half day (3 hours) designed for those who have completed the smoking cessation training or similar.
Motivational Interviewing Training
This full day course covers the spirit and practice of motivational interviewing. Motivational interviewing is used in a variety of settings to help patients who are addicted to nicotine and other substances. It is also used to help people to make lifestyle/behavioural changes, such as altering their diet or increasing their levels of exercise
Enhanced Motivational Interviewing
This half day training (4 hours) is a review of motivational principals and techniques. Further skills on
- Avoiding pitfalls
- Influencing the decision balance
- Working with resistance
