Volunteering
You make a living by what you get but you make a life by what you give. Winston Churchill
Volunteers play a vital role in the Cancer Society's mission by improving community well-being by reducing the incidence and impact of cancer.
Volunteers add value, enabling the Society to carry out and provide services far beyond those our budget would allow. They contribute to all areas of the Society's work:
- patient support and information services
- fundraising and special events
- health promotion - cancer prevention and early detection
- administration
Volunteers play key roles as policy makers on the Executive Committee, as fundraisers contributing to Daffodil Day and Relay For Life, as drivers ferrying patients to and from treatment, as support volunteers in the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre, in the community and at Margaret Stewart House, as coordinators of patient and family support teams, as collators and distributors of information and resources, as assistants processing mail appeals and entering data and as promoters of healthy lifestyles.
We take care to ensure that everyone who volunteers for the Cancer Society has a rewarding experience, that their placement is of real benefit to the community and satisfying to them. Your interests, skills, experience and time available are taken into account when identifying a role for you.
We provide an orientation, appropriate training as necessary and up-skilling opportunities. Support is provided by staff and fellow volunteers and a contribution to out-of-pocket expenses is offered. There is an opportunity to learn new skills, refresh old ones, gain experience, make new friends, and have fun!
If you would like to find out more about working as a Volunteer for the Cancer Society we'd love to hear from you.
