What Volunteers Say:

A driver of 30 years experience says “I consider it a great privilege to be able to help people and to experience their warm appreciation.”  The gratitude and bravery of cancer patients is something she notices.

An administrative support volunteer at the Cancer Society’s offices, Richard Evans House, says: “The people here are incredibly warm and friendly.  The Cancer Society helps the community so much in terms of education, research and support services.  I am so glad to be part of it.”

A volunteer driver, in part-time work, has on occasions to decline a request from the driving service coordinator to do an assignment but she says “that is the greatest thing about being a volunteer – you are allowed to say ‘No’ if it doesn’t fit into your plans or commitments for that day.”

The volunteer who originally coordinated the Daffodil Day Display Boxes and whose first assignment had been as website research assistant for a health promotion project observed that: “Often people don’t believe that they have anything to offer, but the Society’s ability to channel your skills and talents into different areas is fantastic.”

A volunteer who became a driving service coordinator after retiring from paid work commented: “I missed the contact that one enjoys when part of a large organisation, so voluntary work was useful for meeting people and keeping in touch with the community.”

Wellington gratefully acknowledge the support of these organisations:
