Volunteer Opportunities
"Volunteering - a simple gesture that makes a world of difference"
Volunteering opportunities are many and varied and can fit in with the rest of your life.
Whatever your skills almost certainly they can work for us. We will do our best to find a role for you that fits in with your interests, and we will be as flexible as possible enabling you to volunteer at the times that suit you best. Many volunteers fit their volunteering around full time work at home or in the community, whilst others are students or now retired.
Cancer Society work is greatly enhanced by volunteers with advisory, catering, collating, coordinating, copywriting, clerical, data entry, editorial, facilitation, financial, fundraising, grant writing, guiding, hairdressing, hospitality, interviewing.
DRIVERS
Maintaining a driving service is an important function of the Cancer Society. Volunteers drive people with cancer to outpatient treatment at Wellington Regional Hospital. There is always a place for another driver! At the present time Cancer Society Wellington Division is very keen to acquire the services of more people from Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata. Currently we particularly welcome enquiries about Volunteer Driving from people on the Kapiti Coast.
If you have a car, a current driver's licence, and can spare some time (as little or as much as you like), you will discover that this will almost certainly be the best job you never get paid to do. You will receive an orientation, training, a contribution to your out of pocket expenses, and free parking at Wellington Regional Hospital and the Cancer Society carpark at 52 Riddiford Street, Newtown.

Margaret Stewart House
Are you able to volunteer - say four hours a week? You would be rostered as part of the friendly and valued team at Margaret Stewart House. This home-away-from-home for patients is run by a full-time supervisor with volunteer assistance. Volunteers do most things, from housekeeping to reception duty, from flower arranging to gardening.
You will receive training and support and your out of pocket expenses will be met.
Margaret Stewart House is in the grounds of Wellington Hospital. It provides accommodation for cancer patients from out-of-town (and their caregivers) who are undergoing treatment at the Wellington Blood & Cancer Centre. Margaret Stewart, when diagnosed with advanced cancer, left the bulk of her estate to the Wellington Division of the Cancer Society.

LIFE MEMBER RECOGNITION PROJECT
During National Volunteer Awareness Week June 2010 the hand-crafted Life Member book was displayed in the reception area at Richard Evans House.
We need your help! Only a small number of Life Members’ stories have been shared. We are anxious that all Life Members be acknowledged and the tribute to them be included in the Life Member book.
If you have a connection with any of the people listed below, or know someone who has, and would be able to share some information to enable a tribute to be written about them, then please contact Ann Hodson DD 04 389 0050 or annh@cancersoc.org.nz Or you may not know any of these folk, but if you enjoy researching or have a love of history and/or writing, you could make a valuable contribution to this project. This is a chance to bring your light out from under the bushel!
It is a matter of urgency to us that this recognition project be progressed and honour paid to those whose contribution earned them Life Membership of the Cancer Society NZ Wellington Division.

NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
CANWAIT
Paul Smith, Charge Nurse Manager, Day Ward, Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre, has identified another volunteer role building on the success of the CanDo team.
We will be looking for volunteers who could be available on Mondays or Tuesdays or Wednesdays 9.00am to 1.00pm, or all day on Thursdays to assist in the Level 3 waiting room on busy clinical days. You will become part of a team highly valued by the Day Ward staff.
CANBE
We are recruiting volunteers for Ward 5 North at Wellington Regional Hospital to contribute to the wellbeing of people affected by cancer and undergoing treatment. Volunteers will need to be available on a regular rostered basis, weekly or fortnightly, 9.00am until approximately 3.00pm. They will assist with patient comfort in various ways, provide support for out-of-town patients, and signpost and facilitate patient links with the Cancer Society’s Information and Support Services.
CANWORK Community Champions
Volunteers are needed to speak man to man about men’s health and wellness. Can you do this where you live, work and play? You don’t need a degree, just a degree of enthusiasm.
CanWork is a programme to promote men’s health and cancer awareness within workplaces and community organisations. The Champion’s role is to meet with interested groups to raise awareness and enhance their understanding of wellness, and to signpost Cancer Society services.
