Events
The Cancer Society hosts an annual event with the goal of increasing public awareness of the links between Physical Activity, Nutrition and Cancer.
The most recent was the December 2009 event. The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), Fight Obesity Epidemic (FOE), The Health Promotion and Policy Research Unit, O(tago University (HEPRU) and Quigley and Watts hosted a seminar entitled: Fags and Fat: The synergies between tobacco control and obesity prevention.
Presenters were:
Emeritus Prof Robert Beaglehole. Who took an A historic look at the tobacco and food industries
Professor Boyd Swinburn, Deakin University who addressed The industries today and how we move forward
Jane Martin from the Obesity Policy Coalititon, Victoria, Australia) who spoke about Policy and programmes in a different political environment
Professor Janet Hoek, Otago University - Marketing similarities between the tobacco and food industries
Presentations were followed by a Panel discussion which was well received by the almost 200 attendees.
In November 2008 a Physical Impact Symposium was held in Wellington. The symposium hosted by the Cancer Society with support from SPARC and the Ministry of Health presented initiatives that can positively influence healthy eating and active lifestyles.
