Smokefree MaraeAn increasing number of Marae are declaring themselves smokefree. According to Te Hotu Manawa Māori, of the 918 Marae in Aotearoa/New Zealand, over one third (320 sites) have voluntarily declared themselves totally smokefree. This is in addition to the 20% (195 sites) which are smokefree due to legal requirements, and a further 15% (129 sites) which are partially smokefree. This figure is growing every year. Te Hotu Manawa Maori run the Marae Auahi Kore programme which is designed to assist and support Marae to achieve Auahi Kore status.
