Sunbeds

Using a sunbed or solarium, even occasionally, can significantly increase your risk of melanoma.

Sunbeds emit artificial UVA and UVB radiation. Both are known to be directly responsible for causing skin cancer and prematurely ageing your skin.  The ultraviolet radiation from solaria is much stronger than the summer midday sun.

The Cancer Society advises people not to use sunbeds.  It is dangerous to use a sunbed if you have fair skin or skin that burns easily.

The Cancer Society has an information sheet which outlines the harms of sunbeds.

The Cancer Society and Consumer NZ are unhappy about misleading claims being made by sunbed operators  -  read their letter to the Commerce Commission.
